Education in Portugal in one place

The Education Portal is the single point of access to the different areas of the Education and Higher Education sector in Portugal.

It is a portal that will centralise and simplify access to Education services, bringing together in one place what is currently spread across multiple platforms.

This development will be based on a new, user-oriented access model, delivering the following benefits:

Message from the Minister of Education, Science and Innovation

At the start of this parliamentary term, we made a clear commitment to the entire education community: to cut red tape, simplify processes, and make public services faster, more effective, and more responsive to people’s needs. Today, we are taking another step towards delivering on that commitment.

National Higher Education Access Competition opens with applications already in July

The first phase of the 2026 national higher education access competition begins on 20 July.

Candidates under the emigrants’ quota and those requesting the substitution of entry examinations with foreign exams must apply between 20 and 27 July. All other candidates have an extended deadline, until 6 August. The results of the first phase will be published on 23 August, and placed candidates must complete their enrolment between 24 and 27 August.

The second phase will take place between 24 August and 2 September, with results released on 13 September. The third phase of applications will run from 22 to 24 September, with results published on 30 September.

How to apply online
Applications for the national competition for access and admission to public higher education must be submitted exclusively online, through the application system available on the website of the Institute for Higher Education (IES, I.P.) (Online Application).
To complete the process, students must follow these steps:

  1. Request an access password: A new password must be requested via the Password Request Form available on the portal.
  2. Password validity: Passwords issued in previous years cannot be used to submit an application in 2026. All candidates must submit a new request.
  3. Confirmation: After completing the online request, students must follow all indicated procedures to submit the request receipt to their secondary school or to a Higher Education Access Office (GAES) in their area of residence.

In the national competition, candidates may apply for up to six institution/course pairs, that is, six different combinations of institutions and programmes, listed in order of preference. Admission requirements for each programme with available places are provided in the course index.

For further information, students may contact a Higher Education Access Office or consult the Application Guide 2026 – Public Higher Education.

The DGES is now the Institute for Higher Education (IES, I.P.)
The National Higher Education Access Competition is organised by the Access Department of the Institute for Higher Education (IES, I.P.), formerly DGES.
As established by Decree-Law No. 109/2025, the creation of IES, I.P. results from Public Administration reform and brings together responsibilities from the Directorate-General for Higher Education (DGES), the National Erasmus+ Education and Training Agency, and the General Secretariat for Education and Science. This consolidation aims to modernise public administration by centralising responsibilities for higher education access and international mobility within a single, more agile, integrated structure focused entirely on supporting students.

Learn about the MEGA Programme

The MEGA Programme aims to support families in acquiring school textbooks, ensuring both free access and reuse, as part of promoting educational success and equity in access to education.

The corresponding vouchers are made available, as usual, from the month of August, allowing families to prepare for the start of the school year in advance. All necessary steps are currently underway to operationalise the process, ensuring that the issuance and distribution of vouchers take place efficiently and in a timely manner.

The MEGA Programme therefore continues to establish itself as a key structural measure supporting families and promoting the sustainability of the education system.

The National Reading Plan promotes reading initiatives at the Porto Book Fair 2026

The National Reading Plan, a unit of the Reading Promotion Department of EduQA, I.P., will be present at the Porto Book Fair 2026 with a range of initiatives dedicated to promoting reading. These will take place from 4 to 6 September, between 5:00 pm and 6:30 pm, in the gardens of the Palácio de Cristal.

The programme includes the Consultório de Leitura, a personalised support space for readers of all ages, offering tailored recommendations, as well as activities with and for families, where strategies will be shared for selecting books, making them more accessible in everyday life, and fostering moments of reading and discovery within the family.

The 2026 edition of the Porto Book Fair runs from 21 August to 6 September and pays tribute to Porto-born poet Inês Lourenço.

More about the Education Portal

The Education Portal represents a structural change in the way people interact with the education system.

The Education Portal is intended for the entire education community, including students, parents or guardians, teachers, technical staff and assistants, headteachers and other stakeholders in the education system. At an initial stage, some services may be available only to specific audiences, with access being progressively expanded.

The Education Portal centralises access to:

🔹Relevant information about the education system
🔹Access to digital services and education platforms
🔹Content on procedures, deadlines and guidance
🔹Latest news, highlights and institutional communications
🔹Support channels and interaction with services

The launch of the Education Portal represents an initial step. Ongoing development will ensure the delivery of an increasingly integrated, comprehensive and relevant experience for the education community as a whole.

By bringing together content and services in a single place, the portal reduces scattered information, eliminates the need to navigate multiple websites, and provides a faster, clearer and more efficient experience.
